ENG : This exhibition conveys a perception of the other and otherworldliness, through the concepts of exploration, colonisation, exoticism and circulation between different cultures and regions, forming bonds between photographic series and lands explored from the 19th century to today. The photographers exhibited sometimes refer to the fields of botany and anthropology, but above all they question ethnocentrism and re-activate the imaginary exoticism that Victor Segalen considered as 'what is the other', a desire to know the other and otherworldliness, continually fluctuating according to points of view. The exoticism conveyed in albums and books by explorers during their voyages of discovery were many accounts that showed a fixed image of the other and are reconstructed and questioned today. For Claude Lévi-Strauss understanding others is to 'feel what others feel, it is to unsubscribe from oneself, to tear yourself away from yourself' (Tristes Tropiques). Many questions are raised in this group exhibition.

FR : L'exposition évoque le regard porté sur l'Autre et sur l'Ailleurs, à travers les notions d'exploration, de colonisation, d'exotisme, de circulation entre différentes cultures et territoires et tisse des liens entre séries photographiques et territoires explorés du 19e siècle à aujourd'hui. Les photographes exposés se réfèrent parfois aux domaines de la botanique ou de l'anthropologie, mais surtout ils questionnent le regard ethnocentré et ré-activent l'imaginaire d'un exotisme que Victor Segalen considérait comme « ce qui est Autre », un désir de connaître l'Autre et l'Ailleurs, sans cesse fluctuant au gré des points de vue. L'exotisme qui était véhiculé dans les albums et les livres des explorateurs durant leurs voyages de découvertes étaient autant de témoignages qui montraient une image figée de l'Autre, qui est aujourd'hui reconstruite et questionnée. Pour Claude Lévi-Strauss comprendre les autres c'est « ressentir ce que ressentent les autres, c'est dé-adhérer à soi-même, c'est s'arracher à soi » (Tristes Tropiques) autant d'interrogations suscitées dans cette exposition collective.
